Metrological solutions for optical radiation for industrial purposes

Luminaires, spotlights

Manufacturers of luminaires and spotlights require measurement technology that is tailored to the specifics of the lamps used. Gigahertz-Optik GmbH produces devices for the intensity measurement of different parameters, the actinic effect, spectrum, light color, temporal switch-on behavior, flicker, long-term stability, as well as UV and blue light hazard. with the BTS handheld meters you can measure all these parameters.

Optoelectronic sensors

Optoelectronic sensors are used for contactless registration, distance measurement, distance monitoring, identification, area protection and data transfer. LEDs and laser diodes are used as sources whereas phototransistors and photodiodes are used as receivers in the UV-VIS-NIR spectral range. Gigahertz-Optik GmbH offers measurement technology for CW and time interval intensity measurement as well as for spatial radiation and receiving characteristics.

Glazing, films and filters

Light transmission is the visually perceived light transmittance of transparent materials. This is important in the glazing specification of all types of vehicles as well as display films and panes whose transmittance is evaluated with the photometric sensitivity (V(λ)) of the human eye. Gigahertz-Optik GmbH produces measurement devices and integrating spheres for light transmission measurement.

Metrological solutions for optical radiation for application purposes

General and accent lighting

LED lamps are increasingly being used for artificial light in general and accent lighting. The typical emission spectra of the LED have expanded the requirements profile of light meters.  Unlike before where illuminance measurement had more priority, measurement of the color temperature, color rendering index and flicker is now also essential for standard illumination evaluation systems. With its BTS device series, Gigahertz-Optik GmbH offers high-quality light meters for LED illumination.

Photochemistry and radiation curing

High performance lamps have high irradiance levels through which accelerated photochemical reactions can be initiated. Besides the high-energy short-wave radiation, a proportion of infrared heat radiation is often necessary as well.  With the RCH series, Gigahertz-Optik GmbH offers UV and blue light radiation detectors, gas discharge lamps and LED lamps with a irradiance of up to 40W/cm².

Phototherapy

UV and blue light hazard, laser diodes as well as gas and solid-state lasers in the lowest intensity segment are used in the phototherapy. Gigahertz-Optik GmbH offers measurement devices for:

– UV-A, UV-B and UV-C irradiance

– UV-B 311 nm and excimer laser 308 nm irradiance for re-pigmentation in Vitiligo

– Bilirubin irradiance, etc.

UV and Blue-light hazard

Ultraviolet radiation and intensive blue light are hazardous to the skin and eyes. Measurement of the UV proportion in both sunlight and artificial light requires instruments with the highest possible contrast between short and long wave sensitivity. Besides manufacturing measurement instruments and personal dosimeters for the ICNIRP and ERYTHEMA effective irradiance, Gigahertz-Optik GmbH has been a partner of the UV-measurement network whose main goal is to determine UV key figures.

Metrological solutions for optical radiation in research and development

Measurement devices for optical radiation

The application, use and effect of optical radiation is the subject of many research and development fields. Since 1986, Gigahertz-Optik GmbH has been producing measurement devices for different measurement fields. These include the measurement of absolute photometric and radiometric parameters as well as time-resolved measurement of optical radiation in the UV-VIS-NIR spectrum.

Optical material properties

Light transmission, reflection and absorption are the most important parameters for material properties when using optical radiation. With the ART and ARTA series, Gigahertz-Optik offers integrating spheres that are tailored to the specifics of scattered radiation measurement. Measurement devices for the spectral transmission in the visible spectral range top up the product range.

Integrating sphere modular system

Integrating spheres integrate and mix optical radiations independent of direction and spectrum.  This function is used in many applications. In addition to the standard integrating spheres with 2, 3 and more ports, Gigahertz-Optik GmbH also offers a modular system with its UM series integrating spheres.  This has different modules that can be combined depending on the planned application.

Optically diffuse materials

Optically diffuse reflective materials are used in two– and three-dimensional designs. Typical applications of the 2D design include the reflection standards and projection surfaces. 3D options include integrating spheres, laser pump chambers and other radiation integrators.  Gigahertz-Optik GmbH offers barium sulfate color and synthetic reflective raw material or as a semi-finished and finished product in customized designs.

Homogeneous light sources

Luminous fields with higher luminance homogeneity levels are used for pixel adjustment of image sensors and camera systems. The same intensity is applied on every pixel straightened on this luminous field. Deviations in pixel signals can hereby be adjusted. Gigahertz-Optik GmbH manufacturers its homogeneous light sources using integrating spheres, lamps and monitor detectors from its own production.

Calibration standards

Calibration entails determining the deviation of a measurement device from the nominal value of a calibration standard. Gigahertz-Optik GmbH offers calibration lamps and detectors for various optical radiation parameters. Our calibration laboratory is accredited by DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (registration no. D-K-15047-01-00 by DAkkS) for the spectral irradiance and spectral responsivity.

Transfer standards

We use transfer standards for the recalibration of measurement devices that are integrated in production facilities or production processes.  These enable recalibration of the measurement device by the user. To maintain traceability, the transfer standards only need to be periodically recalibrated by Gigahertz-Optik‘s calibration laboratory.

Expertise in optical radiation measurement – Traceable measurement results

Calibration laboratory for optical radiation measurement quantities

The calibration laboratory for optical radiation measurement quantities is the most important station of our quality assurance. This develops and implements strategies for traceable calibrations for all our products. In order to meet the versatile requirements of our products, our calibration laboratory, with a laboratory area of more than 300 m², can trace back to a wide-ranging portfolio of high-quality testing and measurement equipment as well calibration standards.

22 years accredited calibration laboratory

Our calibration laboratory for spectral irradiance and spectral responsivity was accredited by the German Calibration Service and the German National Metrological Institute in 1993 (reg. no. DKD-K-10601). 2009 was marked by the DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation by the DAkkS (reg. no. D-K-15047-01-00).

Standard-compliant measurement devices

Besides traceable calibration, standard-compliant measurement devices are the other essential requirement for traceable measurement results. Gigahertz-Optik GmbH therefore dedicates much attention to ensuring the measurement geometry complies with the relevant international guidelines and standards.

Transfer standards for recalibration

Besides the initial calibration of measurement devices, periodic recalibration during their entire period of use is essential for maintenance of the measurement quality. For mobile meters, the measurement device is usually sent to our laboratory for recalibration. Measurement devices that are integrated in production facilities or that cannot be easily shipped due to their large sizes are on the other hand recalibrated using transfer standards.
