How High-Speed Cameras Work and What They’re Used For
A high-speed camera is a special camera. It captures slow-motion video by recording at high frame rates. These rates are much higher than those of regular video cameras. Most standard cameras record at about 30 frames per second (fps).
High-speed cameras can capture 1000 fps, 5000 fps, or even over a million frames per second in special setups. This lets us record incredibly fast events and play them back in slow motion to see all the tiny details.
How Do High-Speed Cameras Work?
High-speed cameras work by capturing more frames in a single second, then playing them back at a normal speed like 1000 fps. This stretch in time makes everything appear to move in slow motion. To do this, the camera needs:
a. A high frame rate sensor.
b. A fast shutter speed.
c. A strong light source, since higher fps usually means shorter exposure time.
d. Fast data transfer and storage, since these cameras create massive amounts of data in real time.
Ready for high-resolution and high-speed performance? Discover the power of the MIPOS 800.
Our partner Piezosystem Jena presents the MIPOS 800. The MIPOS 800 is a piezo-driven Z-axis positioning system offering up to 800 µm of precise travel. Designed for direct mounting on standard microscope objectives, it enables ultra-fast and highly accurate focus adjustments — ideal for 3D imaging, bio-research, and confocal microscopy applications.
A unique parallelogram design guarantees high parallel motion without influencing the optical axis. The precise positioning repeatability of the MIPOS 800 can be guaranteed by the use of the integrated strain-gauge measurement system. The design which includes an integrated preload of the actuator offers high resonant frequency and a highly parallel motion.
Due to the unique design of the MIPOS 800, fast scanning applications can be accurately realized with short settling times.

Our partner codixx AG, renowned for its colorPol® dichroic glass polarizers, is expanding its expertise into the field of optical sensing. They introduces a new generation of filter elements with an axis accuracy of 0.05°. This innovation enables more precise measurements in optical communication, quantum and sensor technology.
The polarization of light influences the focusing of laser beams, defines the cutoff wavelengths of filters, and prevents unwanted reflections. Thanks to improved axis accuracy, optical measuring devices such as PER meters and fiber optic sensors particularly benefit. In optical communication, the new filters optimize the measurement of Y-couplers and the alignment of quarter-wave plates. In fiber optic sensors, they enable higher precision and reproducibility in detecting physical changes.
“This development is a direct response to the demands of our customers,” says Friederike Marschalk, Head of Marketing and Sales at codixx. “Our advanced manufacturing technology creates real value for efficiency and productivity.”
With this codixx AG is setting new standards in the precision of optical measurement techniques.
